Hello again!
I've reposted my original message below and have now followed up with both the local JD dealership and the JD helpdesk via the internet. The helpdesk at JD "HQ", if that is where these messages go, responded that the tractor should start according to the manual: i.e. the first stop on the ignition keyswitch should be held until the 'click' is heard, and then the key should be turned all the way to start. It should start properly if this sequence is followed. I took the EMailed response from JD "HQ" to my local dealership and talked to the mechanic. He said he would contact a Deere mechanic directly and either (a) have that mechanic issue a document to me confirming that with this tractor model, the glow plugs only heat when the key is in the "start" position, or (b) agree to bring the tractor back in to see if there is anything amiss. The local mechanic swears that he has talked to several mechanic/engineer types at Deere "HQ" that have told him to use the "transmission safety feature" described below to start this model tractor. So in combination with some of the reports here, it may just be bad engineering that the glow plugs are only activated when the key is all the way to the "start" position on this and similarly-circuited models. I'm currently awaiting the response from Deere HQ through the local mechanic to see how this will play out and will post the result. Any additional comments are welcome.....

I'm pretty happy with my recent JD4010 purchase except for an issue with the starting. The engine started fine shortly after purchase, but began to decline within weeks of having it home. The unit now has about 13 hr on it and I need to let the starter turn for about 7 - 10 sec. before it thinks about firing. Once it fires, it coughs white smoke for 15 - 30 sec. and finally smoothes out. Note that I am following the instructions of turning the key to the first "stop" position until hearing the little "click" inside before turning the key all the way to engage the starter. I used some diesel additive as recommended and am using recommended grade diesel in the engine.
I finally called the dealership and a tech there said that there is a problem with the circuit configuation of the glow plugs in these units, in that the first stop position on the ignition may(?) not warm the plugs: His 'workaround' was to put the transmission shifter into gear, turn the key all the way to start....hold this for 5 sec, then push the shifter to neutral which would let the starter spin. This actually works very well......which leaves me wondering why one has to do this when it is no where in the manual? Is this a defect in the design of the glow plug circuitry? Would this cause circuit or other problems down the road? It would be nice to take care of the issue while it is still under warrantee.

There is something not right here. I ran my 4100 for 160 hours and I always got the click and a good start.
As an aside, I found my 4100 ran/started a lot better with 3 or 4 times the standard dose of diesel additive, and ran exactly as you describe with untreated fuel. ....

I agree that your dealer is not addressing the entire problem and that something is still not right. I am thinking along the lines of a timer relay or fuse.
Here is the phone number to my Deere dealer. 1-800-726-7172 Call them and ask for Eddie Borders. Eddie is the Service Leader and I am sure he can set you straight or get one of his mechanics to come talk to you. If it turns out that you need a part that is not covered by warranty, ask for Ricky in parts. Tell him Randy sent you. He gives a discount to Tractor Point members plus their prices are the best I have seen so far for parts anywhere. Hope this helps. ....

If Deere HQ will not back up the alternative starting procedure, then it will be going back to the shop. At the shop, I would have them check for what DR was alluding to: BAD FUEL. I checked on the pump to make sure that the diesel that was purchased meets or exceeds the specs in the manual. I have used a diesel additive, but only at the recommended rates.....maybe more is needed. I am a bit worried about condensation; it gets very humid at times, and then cools down dramatically. I've tried to keep the tank topped off as much as possible to avoid condensation, but the fuel may be absorbing some still. The fuel bowl/filter show no signs of water or debris, but this has not been changed since the tractor was purchased.
I will also call Lion's reference at the 800 number...with mechanics and doctors, always good to get second opinion!
Well....we will take it one step at a time. Hopefully it's nothing terminal. It runs so good once it's warmed up....chasing the pigs around the farmyard has never been so much fun!

You can't hurt it by bumping up the fuel additive. It just adds Cetane and makes it run better, smoother and virtually smoke free. ....

This may sound way-out but bear with me. I have a 4200 that is 5 years old and 500 hours. It runs like a champ, but I had a hard starting issue for more than 2-1/2 years. It refused to start right up if the weather was hot. At 0 degrees it started no problem, but above 70 or so it would crank but not start. After several tries (and 1 or 2 false starts) it runs just fine. It ALWAYS started within 5 or 10 minutes. NOW the fix- a bad THERMISTOR behind the fuseblock. Costs about $4.25, and solders in after cutting out the old one. JD part # LVU10323. Thanks to Alan at Pittsfield Lawn and Tractor.
